First opened on the 6th of October 1980, the West Highland Way is now undoubtedly Scotland's favourite long-distance path, some 95 miles (152km) in length, linking Milngavie, on the outskirts of Glasgow to Fort William in the imposing shadow of Ben Nevis. Our spectacular route takes us along ancient roads which have, in the past seen drovers herding their cattle, soldiers marching and travellers making their way from the lowlands, across the Highland Boundary Fault, along the shores of Loch Lomond in the footsteps of Rob Roy MacGregor, and into the Scottish Highlands. The area has abundant wildlife, including Red Deer, birds of Prey and the Feral Goats left behind after the highland clearances.
Completing the West Highland Way is a huge achievement for all who walk it and this adventure remains a clear favourite with all Mountain and Glen leaders! Superb scenery, excellent accommodation and good company make this a trip of a lifetime!
Graded as medium/hard it is well within the capabilities of most people with reasonable levels of fitness and stamina. All timings on the route are approximate and may vary.

Duration: 7 days
Day One - Milngavie to Drymen, 12 miles, 6 hours - We rendezvous in Milngavie on the outskirts of Glasgow. After introductions, a safety briefing and discussion around the week ahead, we head off for our first destination, Drymen. Our route takes us past the Campsie Fells and near to the Glengoyne Whisky distillery (detours on request!). We arrive in Drymen in time for dinner and some well deserved refreshments!
Day Two - Drymen to Rowardennan, 14 miles, 7 hours - Shortly after today's departure we start the climb towards Conic Hill, on the Highland Boundary Fault which marks the start of the Scottish Highlands. At this point we will have remarkable views over Loch Lomond, Britain's largest body of fresh water containing some 2,600,000,000 cubic metres! Our route then descends through forest and along the shoreline until we reach our second overnight stop, Rowardennan.
Day Three - Rowardennan to Inverarnan, 14 Miles, 8 Hours - As we depart from Rowardennan our route takes us to the north of Loch Lomond, through picturesque woodland, a haven for all kinds of wildlife. We stop for a while to take a look at the cave in which Rob Roy MacGregor sought refuge in the early eighteenth century, before continuing on to our next overnight stop at Inverarnan, via Scotland's most historic inn, the Drovers, built in 1705!
Day Four - Inverarnan to Tyndrum, 13 Miles, 7 Hours - After saying goodbye to Inverarnan we head to the north of Loch Lomond into the more open ground of Glen Falloch. Our route follows banks of the River Falloch for most of our way to Crianlarich, where we normally stop for a bite to eat. After lunch our route becomes a gentle walk through forest and farmland to our next overnight stop at Tyndrum.
Day Five - Tyndrum to Kingshouse, 19 Miles, 10 Hours - Our longest day on the route and for many the best! We experience a real mix of mountain and moorland as we head across the brooding and exposed Rannoch Moor. Our fifth overnight stop is at the historic and incredibly atmospheric Kings House Hotel. (The building was used after the Battle of Culloden (1745), as a barracks for the English troops of King George III, hence the name Kings House.)
Day Six - Kingshouse to Kinlochleven, 9 Miles, 5 Hours - Today's route takes us through Glencoe, the site of the famous 1692 massacre, before heading up the 'Devil's Staircase' and past the highest point on the West Highland Way (548m). From here on a clear day the mountains of the Nevis Range can be seen. With the end almost in sight we head down into the village of Kinlochleven, home to the UK's largest indoor ice climbing facility and our penultimate night's accommodation!
Day Seven - Kinlochleven to Fort William, 14 Miles, 8 Hours - The final day of our odyssey! We follow a well-trodden path north through the mountains of the Mamores and into Glen Nevis, with the great Ben itself to our north! Our epic journey ends at the end of the Glen and Fort William, where we emerge back into civilisation! A final night's rest here and celebrations for those still able to raise a glass to each other and their memories of the West Highland Way!
PLEASE NOTE: Extra days for sightseeing or additional activities can be added to all of our adventures. We would be more than happy to discuss your requirements.
