Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain, rises from sea-level on the shores of Loch Linnhe, to loom ominously 4,408ft (1,344m) above the town of Fort William. In fact, the summit of 'The Ben' (as it is known locally) lies only a few hundred feet below the permanent snow line!
This adventure will take you to the highest point in the British Isles, under the watchful eye of one of our professional leaders.
Grade: ![]()
Duration: 1 day
We assemble at the Glen Nevis Visitor's Centre for a quick safety brief and kit check before commencing the walk.
As we start up the Ben Nevis Path the climb begins as we cross footbridges to reach the Red Burn, after which the path climbs in a series of long winding zig-zags before reaching the summit plateau.
On the plateau the route takes us through a mass of stones and boulders. On a clear day the views across to Glen Coe are breathtaking, and include the subject of one of our other adventures, the famous notched ridge of the Aonach Eagach.
The final part of our climb takes us to the summit proper, marked by an Ordnance Survey trig point, cairns, an emergency shelter and the ruins of an observatory. The latter was permanently manned by meteorologists between 1883 and 1904! The view to the north and east takes in Carn Mor Dearg, Aonach Mor, and Aonach Beag, which are three of only nine peaks over 4000 feet in the British Isles, five others lie in the Cairngorms to the East, and, most importantly, you are standing on the other one!
If the weather permits, we take a short lunch on the summit before retracing our steps back to the Visitor's Centre below.
Graded as medium/hard this one-day adventure is well within the capabilities of most people with good levels of fitness and stamina. All timings are approximate and may vary.
PLEASE NOTE: We can also arrange accommodation for you at the start or end of your adventure if required.
