West Highland Way (Self-guided)

Due to popular demand our West Highland Way adventure is now available on a self-guided basis. We provide all the services you will need to walk the route as an individual or in your own group, including seven nights' accommodation, a daily luggage transfer service, mapping, advice and 24 hour support!

Grade: 3

Itinerary

Duration: 7 days

Day One - Milngavie to Drymen, 12 miles, 6 hours - The walk begins in Milngavie on the outskirts of Glasgow, easily accessible from both the city centre and Glasgow airport. Baggage not being carried on the way is dropped off here and transported onwards for you.

Heading off for your first destination, Drymen, your route takes you past the picturesque Campsie Fells and near to the Glengoyne Whisky distillery (detours recommended!). You should arrive in Drymen in time for dinner and some well deserved refreshments!

Day Two - Drymen to Rowardennan, 14 miles, 7 hours - Shortly after today's departure you will start the climb towards Conic Hill, on the Highland Boundary Fault which marks the start of the Scottish Highlands. At this point you will have remarkable views over Loch Lomond, Britain's largest body of fresh water containing some 2,600,000,000 cubic metres! Your route then descends through forest and along the shoreline until reaching your second overnight stop, Rowardennan.

Day Three - Rowardennan to Inverarnan, 14 Miles, 8 Hours - Departing from Rowardennan your route takes you to the north of Loch Lomond, through picturesque woodland, which is a haven for all kinds of wildlife. We recommend you stop for a while to take a look at the cave in which Rob Roy MacGregor sought refuge in the early eighteenth century, before continuing on to your next overnight stop at Inverarnan, home to Scotland's most historic inn, the Drovers, built in 1705!

Day Four - Inverarnan to Tyndrum, 13 Miles, 7 Hours - After saying goodbye to Inverarnan walkers head to the north of Loch Lomond into the more open ground of Glen Falloch. Your route follows banks of the River Falloch for most of the way before you pass through beautiful woodland near Crianlarich, an ideal lunch spot! After this point your route becomes a gentle walk through forest and farmland to your next overnight stop at Tyndrum.

Day Five - Tyndrum to Kingshouse, 19 Miles, 10 Hours - Your longest day on the route and for most walkers - the best! Experience a real mix of mountain and moorland as you head across the brooding and exposed Rannoch Moor, with superb photographic opportunities as you approach your fifth overnight stop, at the historic and incredibly atmospheric Kings House Hotel at the head of Glencoe. (The building was used after the Battle of Culloden (1745), as a barracks for the English troops of King George III, hence the name Kings House).

Day Six - Kingshouse to Kinlochleven, 9 Miles, 5 Hours - Today's route takes you through Glencoe, the site of the famous 1692 massacre, before heading up the 'Devil's Staircase' and passing the highest point on the West Highland Way (548m). From here on a clear day the mountains of the Nevis Range can be seen. With the end almost in sight walkers head down into the village of Kinlochleven, home to the UK's largest indoor ice climbing facility and your penultimate night's accommodation.

Day Seven - Kinlochleven to Fort William, 14 Miles, 8 Hours - The final day of your odyssey! Your route follows a well-trodden path north through the mountains of the Mamores and into Glen Nevis, with the great Ben itself to our north! Your epic journey ends at the end of the Glen, in the town of Fort William. A final night's rest here and celebrations for those still able to raise a glass to their efforts and memories of the West Highland Way!

PLEASE NOTE: Extra days for sightseeing or additional activities can be added to all of our adventures. We would be more than happy to discuss your requirements.
