At Mountain and Glen we ensure that all our Mountain Leaders are of the highest calibre in every aspect of their work, including their inter-personal skills. Vastly experienced, many are also members of local Mountain Rescue teams and understand that many who take to the hills with us will be experiencing a mountainous environment for the first time. Rest assured they will ensure that the pace and the route taken is comfortable for the whole group.

Meet Our Leaders

Jim Coughlan

Not only formed the company but likes to lead from the front too! Jim is an ex- Royal Marine Commando Senior NCO who has led troops literally all over the world. As well as extensive military training in leadership, navigation, survival and mountaineering, he has also undergone many civilian training courses, including Mountain Leader, winter mountaineering and Emergency First Aid training. In 2006 Jim graduated from the Open University with an Honours degree in Social Science with Politics.

Jim has planned and executed adventurous expeditions in the UK and abroad for the Royal Navy, and was also involved in the planning and delivery of UK and arctic survival courses on behalf of numerous charities. He has been organising successful Three Peaks Challenges since 2006, and regular customers include Wilkinson's stores, Veolia, Premium Credit, Anthony Nolan, Epilepsy Action, CLIC Sargent, Maggie's and Sense.

A keen outdoorsman, enjoys far too many activities to list here but they include long-distance running, caving, climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, snow sports, bushcraft and of course hillwalking!

With a keen sense of humour, boundless energy and more war stories than Uncle Albert, Jim is sure to keep you amused over a pint or two after a hard day on the hill!

Steve Mellor

Steve is our Training and Nutrition adviser.

He has produced a series of Three Peaks Challenge fitness training programmes to dramatically increase all Mountain and Glen customers' chances of a successful challenge.

Steve holds a BSc from the University Of Leeds & MSc from the prestigious Loughborough University. He has spent a number of years lecturing undergraduates in various areas including fitness and training, strength and conditioning as well as Nutrition for Sports performance modules.

He has written and delivered High Performance conditioning programmes for a wide range of sports and international athletes. Having also worked within the fitness industry for 10 years as an Advanced Personal Trainer; his clients have ranged from Arctic explorers to those wanting to shed the pounds. With an unrivalled passion for outdoor exercise and a desire to see his clients achieve their goals, Steve firmly believes in applying simple and effective exercise strategies, used in elite sport, to everyday exercisers.

Steve is an elite rower and ultra endurance athlete. When he is not developing the Mountain and Glen training programmes, he can be found on the river working towards his next goal.

Tom Furey

Tom has worked with us over the last 4 seasons and in that time has become a familiar face to many customers - mainly due to the fact that he guided over 30 complete Three Peaks Challenges in 2011!

Based in North Wales Tom is a keen climber, gorge walker and mountain biker.

If you need advice about the latest piece of kit or clothing Tom's your man!

Freelance Leaders

During busy periods we sometimes use freelance staff to lead our adventures. All these staff have been recommended to us or have worked with us in the past.

We only employ leaders of the highest standards, with skills in a wide range of disciplines and all work to the Mountain and Glen ethos.
